The Mozambican Organization to Support the Social Reintegration of Children in Vulnerable and At-Risk Situations, referred to as OMAC for short, is a non-governmental, social, national, non-profit and economic organization, with legal personality and endowed with financial, administrative and autonomy. equity. It is a legal person governed by private law, governed by its statutes, civil code and individual applicable legislation.
It was created in 1998, whose process of beginning to implement activities within the scope of social protection of orphaned and vulnerable children in extreme risk and marginalized situations, started in 1999, by the initiative and concern of a group of some women social and rights activists. human, motivated and moved by the agglomeration, affluence, frequency, participation and active involvement of a greater number of adolescent children and young people in the work of waste pickers in the municipal dump of Hulene B, in circumstances of total violation of their fundamental rights and at greater risk of contracting various endemic diseases and contagious infections, without any conditions of protection or resources for medical and drug treatment.
OMAC was created essentially to improve the living conditions of vulnerable orphaned children in extreme risk situations. Among which adolescents and young people of both sexes, aged between 06 and 17, who are in a disadvantaged situation and are unable to fully enjoy their fundamental rights. These that were recommended in the minimum standards of care and in the Child protection laws in Mozambique. With a special focus on those who frequent the municipal waste dump of Hulene B, in the Municipal District of Ka Mavota in Maputo City, who, due to various socio-economic situations, resort to that place practicing waste picker activities, searching the garbage deposited there on the day. to-day, in search of self-support and survival.
