About

As Rwanda emerged from the 1994 genocide, Rwandans were extremely impoverished and their communities fractured. Many women were suddenly widows and single mothers, and many of them lacked the skills and education to provide for themselves and their families. Aspire Rwanda founder Peace Ruzage identified these issues within her neighborhood of Gisozi and provided a fresh start to the many struggling women in her community. Peace offered her patio as a meeting place and, before long, 300 women were socializing daily, creating friendships, supporting each other, and sharing ideas on resources to lift themselves out of poverty. This experience led to the creation of the nonprofit organization Aspire Rwanda in 2009.
As the organisation grows we decided to offer a variety of programs to empower women and the youth. These programs include vocational skills training, business skills training, micro-credit loans, agricultural support (for participants living in rural areas). Additionally we offer a robust social empowerment and health education program. With new skills, knowledge and confidence, our participants are able to secure jobs, start or expand their businesses. In doing so, they acquire a steady source of income improving their quality of life.
