Les origines du Groupe Jean Coutu remontent à 1969, date d'ouverture du premier établissement à Montréal par son fondateur, monsieur Jean Coutu. Ce dernier a conçu, pour le secteur de la vente au détail de produits pharmaceutiques et parapharmaceutiques, une formule innovatrice basée sur la vente à escomptes d'une vaste gamme de produits, la qualité du service et les longues heures d'ouverture.

Aujourd'hui, le réseau Jean Coutu figure parmi les noms les plus réputés dans l'industrie canadienne de la vente au détail en pharmacie et compte un réseau de 417 établissements franchisés au Québec, au Nouveau-Brunswick et en Ontario.

En mai 2018, METRO acquiert Le Groupe Jean Coutu (PJC) inc. Le regroupement de ces deux grandes sociétés crée un leader du commerce de détail de 18 milliards de dollars, en position de choix pour répondre aux besoins croissants des consommateurs en alimentation, pharmacie, santé et beauté.

Jean Coutu Group was started in 1969 when Mr. Jean Coutu, the company's founder, opened his first pharmacy in Montreal. He introduced an innovative concept in which pharmaceuticals, related products and other retail merchandise would be sold at large discounts in establishments offering high quality service and extended business hours.

Nowadays, the Jean Coutu network is one of the most trusted names in Canadian pharmacy retailing, with 417 franchised stores in Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario.

In May of 2018, METRO Inc. acquires The Jean Coutu Group (PJC) Inc. The combination of the two leading companies creates a $18 billion retail leader strongly positioned to cater to the growing consumer needs in food, pharmacy, health and beauty.
