Das Sozialwissenschaftliche Institut der EKD (SI) ist am 1. Oktober 2004 aus dem vorherigen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Institut in Bochum und dem Pastoralsoziologischen Institut der Landeskirche Hannovers hervorgegangen. Träger des SI ist die EKD in Kooperation mit der Evangelisch-lutherischen Landeskirche Hannovers.
Das Institut bearbeitet empirisch in interdisziplinärer Verbindung von Theologie und Sozialwissenschaften kirchen- und religionssoziologische, gesellschaftspolitische und soziale Fragen. Die Forschungsergebnisse der Projekte werden als Broschüren, in Buchreihen und auf der Institutswebseite veröffentlicht.
