About
The Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") is a body corporate governed by a Board of Directors. It was established in 1996 by the Environmental Protection Act, Cap 20:05, Laws of Guyana, with a mandate to take such steps as are necessary to effectively manage, conserve, protect and improve the natural environment; prevent or control pollution; assess the impact of developmental activities on the environment; and ensure the sustainable use of Guyana's natural resources. The EPA in fulfilling this mandate must be guided by the following legislation:
Environmental Protection Act of 1996;
Environmental Protection (Authorisations) Regulations 2000;
Environmental Protection (Water Quality) Regulations 2000;
Environmental Protection (Hazardous Waste Management) Regulations 2000;
Environmental Protection (Noise management) Regulations 2000;
Environmental Protection (Air Quality) Regulations 2000;
Environmental Protection (Litter Enforcement) Regulations 2013;
Environmental Protection (Expanded Polystyrene) Regulations 2015;
Environmental Protection (Wildlife Management and Conservation) Regulations 2009.
Mission: To promote, facilitate, and coordinate effective environmental management and protection; and the sustainable use of Guyana's Natural Resources.
