The University of Wismar is looking back on over a hundred and ten years of history. Their unique three-pillar profile with the three faculties - engineering, economics and design - is a main characteristic. Through numerous interdisciplinary projects and collaborations in teaching and research, these three pillars are closely linked and generate special synergy effects.

Teaching, learning, research and manufacturing are also carried out at the external locations in Malchow on the island of Poel and in Rostock / Warnemünde. As a certified "family-friendly university", numerous progressive measures for students and employees with children ensure the compatibility of studies or work and family.

More than half of the students learn by distance learning, for which the university's own Wismar International Graduation Services GmbH – WINGS - is responsible.
