About

The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. was founded in 1977 by Dr. Dorothy Fields. It is a nonprofit manuscript and photographic repository for the legacies of members of Miami's Black community from 1896 to present.

The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida was the catalyst to preserve the Historic Lyric Theater in Miami, Florida's Overtown neighborhood and other historic sites in the city. The theater underwent a major restoration and grand re-opening in 1999, recalling the splendor and exuberance of its days as one of the only black-owned and operated theaters in America.

Today, The Historic Lyric Theater is owned and operated by The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida. The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida also manages the Historic Dorsey House and supports the efforts of the Overtown Historic Folklife Village, a program designed to provide jobs and training to residents of Overtown.
