About

The University of Food Technology (UFT) in Plovdiv has a rich seventy year history and remarkable traditions. It is one of the most important centers in Bulgaria in the field of food science and technology, the only one of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula.

The beginning of the university training in food science and technology was set in September 1948 - the Department of Agricultural Technology was established at the new Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry (later renamed Agronomic) Faculty of Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski". It is here that for the first time in the country begins the training of specialists with higher education in the field of food technology.

In 1950, two higher schools separated from the University of Plovdiv: the Medical Academy and the Higher Agricultural Institute (VSI). By a decree of the Council of Ministers (SG No. 188 / 10.08.1950), the Department of Agricultural Technology grew into the Faculty of Food and Flavor Industry at the VSI. Fourteen departments have been formed in the newly opened faculty, providing training in four technological specialties: "Technology of canning fruits, vegetables, meat and fish"; Tobacco Technology; "Wine Technology" and "Milk and Dairy Technology". The first graduate of the faculty, numbering 28 engineers-technologists, graduated in 1952.

By Decree № 230 of the Presidium of the National Assembly (SG No. 47 / 12.06.1953) the separation from the VSI and the establishment of a new independent educational institution, called the Higher Institute of Food and Taste Industry, took place.
