About
The Animal Breeding Act, 2001 established the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank as a statutory semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in Uganda. Its formation was part of the fulfillment of the aspirations in the National Animal Breeding Policy (1997), document and the Action Plan for its implementation providing guidelines to all actors in the animal breeding and production value-chain. The actors included input suppliers, farmers, companies, researchers, extension workers & civic leaders on suitable breeds for the various ecological and production systems. It also provided for alternative breeding programs; import, export & trade in genetic materials; breeding, management systems for conservation & sustainable use of indigenous genetic resources & use of modern breeding technologies in the country. NAGRC&DB was established with a two-fold mandate; to play a leading role in the commercialization of animal breeding activities in Uganda and to carry out development activities that enhance animal genetic improvement and productivity.
The entity operates 15 Government Animal Genetics Resource Centres strategically situated in the various Agro-ecological zones of Uganda to support animal production systems existing in those regions. The entity runs the only National Accredited Bull Stud in the country for semen production currently serving Uganda and other surrounding East Africa member states. It's Specialized Units; Conservation & Genebanking,Data Bank,National Pig Breeding Program Animal Feed Production, Apiculture,Poultry Development,National Small Ruminants Breeding Program,National Rabbits Breeding Program,Semen Production, Packaging, Storage & Distribution, Liquid Nitrogen Production & Distribution Unit,National Genetic Evaluation & Testing Centre,Assisted Reproductive Technologies,National Livestock Quarantine Centre, Community Based Breeding Program,Foundation Fish Broodstock & Fry Production.
