Background
In 1998, the Ugandan Episcopal Conference decided to have a network of FM radio stations within the country and it chose Lira as its main link in the Northern region. Radio Wa 89.8 FM Limited started its broadcasts in January 2001 as a community radio belonging to the Catholic Diocese of Lira. When Radio Wa started broadcasting, it was the third radio station in Lira.
Radio Wa 89.8 FM Limited, is a non-profit oriented community Radio located near Lira Cathedral Parish main Church in; Cathedral Cell, Ojwina (A) Ward, Lira City West division, Lira City.
Its main goal is to promote harmony, peace, justice and development primarirly in rural communities of Lango Sub region, comprising the following districts: (Lira City Council, Apac, Lira, Kwania Dokolo, Oyam, Otuke, Alebtong, Kole and Amolatar and beyond due to its signal strength of 4KW, an equivalent of (4000 Watts) transmitter which is the highest in Northern region. This gives it a wider coverage than any other radio in the locality and beyond.
Radio Wa has the most diverse programming than any radio stations in the Northern Region. The programs feature music, drama, talk shows, spot messages, DJ mentions, short drama skits, informercials and religious presentations with commercials at regular intervals.
