About
Anglesey Sea Zoo Marine Conservation Centre is a uniquely all native aquarium housing only British species, with water pumped directly from the sea, carrying out breeding programmes for some of the rarest animals in our British seas and leading by example on sustainability and conservation issues by engaging the public and the community and the wider audience in positive environmental change.
As a conservation and environmental centre, we have been organising regular community beach-cleans and litter surveys, contributing to the Beachwatch global database for marine litter, for over 14 years. As an Environmental Hub for Keep Wales Tidy we also lend out kit to local community groups to carry out their own clean-ups.
We co-ordinate voluntary rescue of injured or stranded marine animals and treat and rehabilitate them for release.
We carry out breeding and conservation programmes including our Lobster Hatchery of Wales where we breed and release common lobsters to maintain healthy local populations and endangered species breeding programmes. We are the only institution to house both British seahorse species and spiny lobsters, all of which are now almost extinct in the wild around the UK, for eventual re-release to re-establish wild populations of these almost extinct iconic species.
