About
To be honest, everything about Moo Brew is a bit unconventional. Like the fact the idea for the beer started with a bottle. Yep, David Walsh, the infamous Tasmanian gambling magnate and art collector, was travelling overseas when he found a bottle he liked, so naturally, he decided he'd build a brewery to fill it. As you do.
The brewery was built at David's vineyard Moorilla Estate in Southern Tasmania, which he'd always referred to as Moo Land, and this formed the basis of his new brewery's name – Moo Brew.
Like the artwork of iconoclastic Australian artist John Kelly who was commissioned to create the labels (renowned for taking famous artworks and spinning them in his own distinct style). Similarly, when it came time to brew the beers, Moo Brew has been known from its inception for brewing traditional beer styles with some fundamental tweaks for a subtle twist on the classics.
Moo Brew produce seven staple beers in can and bottle: a Pilsner, German-style Hefeweizen, an American Pale Ale, a Single Hop Tasmanian Pale, Mid Strength, American Dark Ale and Imperial Stout (or some call it the Velvet Sledgehammer).
Throughout the year a suite of Limited Release beers also tend to pop up on tap around Tasmania, and sometimes in Melbourne and Sydney.
You'll always find a Moo Brew at MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) either at the Moorilla Cellar Door or at one of the various Museum bars and restaurants.
