The company was founded in 1908 by Melitta Bentz, after receiving a patent for her coffee filtering system consisting of a filter and filtration paper. The filter system was the first to successfully remove coffee residue in the brewing process, revolutionizing the way coffee was made.

Melitta North America is a part of the privately held Melitta Group in Minden, Germany. Melitta USA, headquartered in Clearwater, FL, is responsible for the production, sale and marketing of coffee filters, roasted and single-serve coffee and non-electric coffee preparation products in the United States. Melitta Canada, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, is responsible for the sale of coffee filters, coffee and non-electric coffee systems in the Canadian provinces. Melitta products are also sold throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.
