About
United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) was created in response to the market demand for Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS). While VSS can advance sustainable trade, small producers in developing countries may be vulnerable in reality.
UNFSS is an initiative of 5 UN Agencies: UNCTAD, ITC, UNIDO, FAO and UN Environment, and more recently UNECE (as of 2021). UNCTAD is the secretariat of the initiative. It helps decision makers in developing countries source adequate information on sustainability standards, as well as share their experiences and get technical help.
The UNFSS is a neutral and independent platform that leverages sustainable value chains to facilitate developing countries ́ access to global markets. The main activities undertaken by UNFSS are:
1. Research – Biennially, UNFSS produces the Flagship Report that focuses on issues related to VSS. UNFSS has established the Academic Advisory Council comprising of an interdisciplinary panel of academic experts, to research on issues around standards and developing countries.
2. Policy Dialogue/ Capacity Building Programmes – UNFSS conducts multiple webinars and roundtables as a part of disseminating information.
3. Support for National Platforms – The UNFSS has established platforms in Brazil, China, India, and Mexico and Initiatives in Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, and Vietnam.
